About
Bringing Content to the Big Screen
As screen time became increasingly competitive, WD sought to expand content access beyond laptops and smartphones. By targeting popular TV streaming devices, we created a new way for users—and their networks of secondary and tertiary users—to engage with stored content, fostering deeper connections and driving device value.
Challenge
Reaching New Audiences Through Shared Screens
The primary challenge was to design a TV app experience that met the needs of secondary and tertiary users—those invited to share storage devices or consume shared content. Balancing simplicity, functionality, and compatibility across diverse streaming platforms required a targeted scope and creative use of existing design systems.
Goal
Enable Seamless Content Sharing and Consumption
Our goal was to create a TV app experience that made it effortless for users to share, access, and enjoy stored content on large screens. By integrating with WD’s single sign-on and common product platform, we aimed to support all current and future devices, delivering lasting value for users and their networks.
Result
A Unified Experience Delivered in Record Time
In just eight months, WD launched apps for Roku, Amazon Fire TV, and Apple TV. Leveraging user research and existing design system components, the apps provided seamless access for secondary and tertiary users. The single sign-on system ensured compatibility across all current and future WD devices, enhancing the value proposition of the entire product ecosystem. This initiative successfully expanded engagement opportunities and solidified WD’s presence in the connected home ecosystem.
